Varyl Cargill Begg

Admiral of the Fleet (retired) Varyl Cargill Begg, (1 October, 1908 – 13 July, 1995) served in the Royal Navy. He was a Special Entry to the Navy on 17 September, 1926.

As with many men born c. 1899 or later, his Service Records at The National Archives do not reflect activity between 1931 and 1939 or so.

Life & Career

Begg was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 1 December, 1930.

Begg was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-Commander on 1 December, 1938.

World War II

Begg was promoted to the rank of Commander on 31 December, 1942.

Begg was promoted to the rank of Captain on 30 June, 1947.

Begg was promoted to the rank of Rear-Admiral on 7 January, 1957.

Begg was promoted to the rank of Vice-Admiral on 21 May, 1960.

Begg was promoted to the rank of Admiral on 8 March, 1963.

Begg was promoted to the rank of Admiral of the Fleet upon his retirement on 12 August, 1968.
