My interest in this forum begins with Cecil Hunter Boyd Gowan, whom I encountered while researching his grandfather, Hunter Davidson. Davidson had served in the United States Navy from 1841 to 1861, the Confederate States Navy from 1861 to 1865, as chief of the Maryland Oyster Police from 1868 to 1872, and finally the Argentine Navy as head of its Torpedo Bureau from 1875 to 1885. I noted some parallels between the two, but will only discuss this in an article I have already prepared for publication, and not in this forum.
Some background: I did serve in the U.S. Naval Sea Cadet Corps from age 14 until age 18, but did not pursue a career in the Armed Forces. Eventually, I did secure placement as a Civil Servant in the Department of the Air Force. Recently, my first history article has been published in the American Aviation Historical Society's AAHS Journal (Vol. 62, No. 1, Spring 2017, pp. 59-64 - see aahs-online.org).
