U.S.S. Brooklyn was a screw sloop completed for the U.S. Navy in 1859.
Construction
Brooklyn was one of the few major U.S. Navy warships built by a private firm during the pre-Civil War era, being built by the Jacob A. Westervelt & Sons of New York City. Her machinery was contracted to the Fulton Iron Works.[8]
Service
Fitted with a complete spar deck in 1869-1870 on the orders of Admiral David D. Porter, but this was subsequently removed in 1879-1881.[9]
Served with the Asiatic Squadron from 1886 until she was decommissioned on 14 May, 1889.[10]
