Royal William Abbott
Captain Royal William Abbott (26 October, 1896 – 23 January, 1992) served in the United States Navy.
Life & Career
Abbott was born in Maine and was appointed to the Naval Academy from the same state.[1] He graduated with the accelerated Class of 1920 on 7 June, 1919 and, with the rank of Ensign was appointed to the battleship New Mexico [2]
As a Lieutenant (Junior Grade) from 7 June, 1922,[3] Abbott next served in submarines, assuming command of R-6 by 1924.[4] He retained command until early 1926.[5]
Abbott was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 7 June, 1925.[6]
Throughout the 1930's, Abbott served in a variety of shore and sea assignments, mainly in submarines and battleships.
Abbott was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant Commander on 30 June, 1935.[7]
Abbott was promoted to the rank of Commander on 1 August, 1939 while serving as navigator on the battleship West Virginia.[8]
World War II
Abbott assumed command of the stores ship Aldebaran upon its commissioning in January 1942 and remained in command until December 1943.[9]
Abbott was promoted to the rank of Captain on 18 June, 1942.[10]
After commanding various Transport Divisions in the latter stages of the war, Abbott retired in June 1947.[11]
