Robert Bland Dixon
Engineer Vice-Admiral Sir Robert Bland Dixon, K.C.B., D.Eng. (1867 – July 28, 1939) served in the Engineering Branch of the Royal Navy.
Life & Career
Dixon was promoted to the rank of Assistant Engineer on 1 July, 1888.[1] In April 1891 he was listed as attending the Royal Naval College, Greenwich.[2]
Dixon was promoted to the rank of Engineer on 1 September, 1892.[3]
Dixon was appointed additional to the Pembroke for service in the Dockyard Reserve at Chatham, in charge of the Drawing Office, on 3 August, 1899.[4] By early 1901, Dixon was serving at Chatham Dockyard as Second Assistant to the yard's Chief Engineer.[5]
Dixon was appointed additional to the drill ship President for service at the Admiralty in the Dockyard Branch on 16 April, 1904.[6] Three months into this appointment, he was promoted to the rank of Engineer Commander on 1 July, 1904.[7]
Dixon was appointed to the Royal Alexandra Dockyard at Haulbowline as Chief Engineer on 24 March, 1909.[8]
Dixon was appointed to Portsmouth Royal Dockyard as Manager of the Engineering Department on 9 October, 1912.[9]
Dixon was promoted to the rank of Engineer Captain on 24 February, 1915.[10]
Dixon was appointed to the Admiralty for service in the Department of the Deputy Controller for Dockyards and Shipbuilding as Assistant Director of Dockyards and Repairs in May 1917. He would spend the rest of his career at the Admiralty in one position or another.[11][12]
Dixon was transferred to the Department Department of the Engineer-in-Chief as an Assistant Engineer-in-Chief on 1 May, 1919.[13] His promotion to the rank of Engineer Rear-Admiral on 1 December, 1919 was followed in a few months' time by appointment as Deputy Engineer-in-Chief on 8 June, 1920.[14]
Dixon was promoted to the rank of Engineer Vice-Admiral on 8 June, 1922.[15]
