Ralph Philip Clutton
Captain (retired) Ralph Philip Clutton, R.N. (9 February, 1872 – 27 March, 1942) served in the Royal Navy.
Life & Career
Clutton placed first in order of merit upon passing out of Britannia in December, 1887. This made him the second successive cadet prepped at Stubbington House School to do this.[1]
Recognized at being "better at school than at tactical work", Clutton was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 14 January, 1892.[2]
Clutton became an expert in hydraulics. After helping revise a manual in the craft, he was promoted to the rank of Commander on 31 December, 1904. In 1906, he helped compile a Hydraulics Manual for Royal Sovereign class battleships.[3]
Clutton was placed on the Retired List at his own request at the rank of Captain on 13 June, 1911.[4]
In July 1914, he was allowed to accept an appointment under the Turkish Government. This naturally proved quite brief, given events. In September 1914 he was recalled from Turkey with the Naval Mission, arriving home on 1 October.[5]
He worked in Transport Service throughout the war and beyond. In June 1919, it was declared that his services would be retained until the war with Russia was over. He reverted to the Retired List on 15 November 1919.[6]
