Commander (retired) Lionel Vavasseur Lloyd, (15 December, 1893 – ) served in the Royal Navy.

Life & Career

The son of Commander Edward W. Lloyd, R.N..[1]

Lloyd passed out of Royal Naval College, Dartmouth in April, 1910 ranked 24th of 77 cadets in marks on the Part I examination.[2]

Lloyd was seriously wounded, shot in the chest, in East Africa at Dar es Salaam on 28 November, 1914. He would not be found fit until 17 March, 1916, being promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 30 January, 1916.[3]

He was appointed to Dolphin for instruction in submarines on 8 November, 1916. On 6 January, 1917 he was appointed to C 30, though he would serve less than two months in this, his only certain submarine posting.[4]

Lloyd was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-Commander on 30 January, 1924.[5]

In the 1930s, Lloyd would come to be an overseer of minesweepers, often in command of a group in reserve, and typically himself as captain of his own vessel.

Lloyd was placed on the Retired List on account of age at the rank of Commander on 15 December, 1938.[6]

World War II

In 1939, perhaps in June, a special report by Rear-Admiral Charles Harris noted that "this oficer appeared to have no sense of responsibility and did not take proper charge of his division of minesweepers. He is inclined to make difficulties. His manner is very [illeg] & excitable."[7]

Lloyd was soon replaced in command of Fifth Minesweeping Flotilla, but later commanded yachts and held staff positions ashore. On 2 October 1945, he was made Acting Commander (D), Reserve Fleet.[8]
