Lewis Harry Clemmer Johnson

Captain (retired) Lewis Harry Clemmer Johnson, (12 January, 1894 – 27 April,1 963) served in the United States Navy.

Life & Career

Johnson was born in Ohio, but was appointed an officer from California.[1]

He began his naval career as an enlisted man in the reserve force.[2]

On 18 September, 1918 he received a temporary commission as an Ensign. He was promoted to the temporary rank of Lieutenant (Junior Grade) on 1 July 1919.[3] This rank was made permanent as of 1 July, 1920.[4] On 21 November, 1921 he became a permanent member of the Officer Corps.[5]

Johnson saw service in submarines, including H-5 and H-7. His first and only command came in the submarine R-4 from June 1923[6] until April, 1924.[7]

Johnson had been promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 3 June 1922.[8] The rest of his career was spent in a mix of sea and shore duty, including multiple tours in the office of the Judge Advocate General of the Navy.

Johnson was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant Commander on 16 January, 1934.[9] He was involuntarily retired on 30 June, 1941.[10] At the time he served as aide to the Judge Advocate General of the Navy.[11]

Recalled to active duty for the duration of the war, Johnson was promoted to the rank of Commander on the Retired List on 25 February, 1942.[12] Johnson was promoted to the rank of Captain on the retired list on 29 November, 1945 and reverted to inactive duty about this time.[13]
