Kenneth John Riddell
Commander (retired) Kenneth John Riddell, (3 June, 1899 – ) served in the Royal Navy.
Life & Career
The son of chartered accountant C. E. Riddell, Esq..
Riddell left the Training Establishment upon outbreak of war and was appointed for two months in the light cruiser Lowestoft before being transferred to the battleship Britannia. He served in her until September 1916 when he was sent to the gunnery training school H.M.S. Excellent for a one-month gunnery course.
He served a year in Courageous from November 1916 and then took a one week course in Torpedo Control in Portsmouth.[1]
He was appointed to Dolphin for a submarine course on 8 July, 1918. He served in a few submarines, including the elderly coastal boat C 25 from 4 October to 19 December, 1918.[2]
Riddell was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 15 October, 1919.[3]
From 19 January 1925 to March 1927, he was in command of a submarine under depot ship H.M.S. Titania, but it is not stated which. On 11 March 1926, he grounded L 4 at Bombay, eliciting the displeasure of the Admiralty for his navigation. Confusingly, other information suggests he was not in command of L 4 at this time.[4]
Riddell was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-Commander on 15 October, 1927.[5]
Having recently spent fourteen months in Furious, Riddell was placed on the Retired List at his own request on 26 January, 1929.[6]
Riddell was promoted to the rank of Commander on 3 June, 1939.[7]
