John Oliver Campbell
Commander (retired) John Oliver Campbell, D.S.O., D.S.C., O.B.E. (18 July, 1899 – 22 June, 1963) served in the Royal Navy.
Life & Career
The son of J. S. Campbell, Esq., an Indian Civil Servant.[1]
Campbell served first in Albion, from August 1914 until she paid off in 1916, perhaps in May. He was next appointed to the light cruiser Neptune from 8 June 1916 to 10 September 1917 when he was sent to H.M.S. Vernon for a Torpedo Control Course. On 19 September 1917 he was appointed to Milbrook, where he would serve until being sent to Paladin on 22 October 1918.[2]
Campbell was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 15 October, 1919.[3]
Campbell was placed on the Retired List at his own request on 9 December, and 1922 and promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-Commander on 15 October, 1927.[4]
World War II
Among other duties, Campbell commanded a ship named H.M.S. Elissa, which may have been based at Alexandria, from 9 August, 1943 (vice Vaughn[?]) through 20 September, 1943.[5]
Campbell was promoted to the rank of Commander on 3 September, 1945.[6]
He was reverted to the Retired List as medically unfit on 26 April, 1946.[7]
