Hugh Blencowe Rooper
Commander Hugh Blencowe Rooper, Royal Navy, Retired (20 June, 1852 – 19 April, 1912) served in the Royal Navy.
He was the older brother of Henry Edward Rooper, who also served in the Navy.
Life & Career
Rooper entered the naval service on 20 May, 1866.[1]
Rooper was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 1 June, 1876.[2]
On 7 May, 1888 he was appointed in command of the Alecto. He was re-appointed and stayed in her on the West Coast of Africa Station until paying her off on 26 February, 1890.[3][4]
Rooper was appointed in command of the gunboat Banterer on 20 August, 1899. Banterer was grounded off Appledore on 13 December, 1891 but it was determined that he had handled the ship in a seamanlike manner and no blame was attributed to anyone.[5]
He married Mrs. Marion J. White, née Perrott on 3 May, 1893 at Monkton Church in County Cork. He was superseded in Banterer on 20 August, 1893 after precisely four years in command.[6]
In the 1895 Tactical Exercises, he was lent to the Assistant Captain Superintendent of Pembroke. The Admiralty expressed displeasure at the lack of zeal Rooper displayed during this assignment.[7]
Being a Lieutenant in his mid-forties placed was an uncomfortable position for any man. Rooper was placed on the Retired List on account of age with the rank of Commander on 30 June, 1897.[8]
