Adding Inline Citations

To add references to an article, first make sure that at the bottom of the page is the header and the "wiki markup" for where the footnotes will appear:

==Footnotes==

{{reflist}}

Then after the sentence or statement in the main body of text, insert <ref>, followed by the reference, closed with </ref>.

The usual format for a reference is "Author's Surname. p. #." Where more than one work by the author is being referenced, then "Author's Surname. Title. p. #."

Here's an example. To check the code click "edit" at the top of the page or section:

Chasing after the Blue Fleet in advance of the Red, Evan-Thomas was able to overhaul and sink four of the Blue cruisers. In patchy fog on the following day, Bellerophon again advanced ahead of the Red Fleet, and suddenly found itself in clear weather in company with six Blue battleships and was ruled to have been sunk, and returned to Berehaven to wait out the rest of the exercise.[1]

Footnotes

  1. Gordon. pp. 372-373.

Adding "Infoboxes"

H.M.S. Jupiter
Career Details
Built By: Clydebank
Laid down: 26 April, 1894
Launched: 18 November, 1895
Commissioned: 8 June, 1897
Sold: 15 January, 1920
Fate: Scrapped

For articles on individual ships (as opposed to ship classes), it has been decided to have a small box in the top-right corner which displays the ship's builder and key dates (as shown at right). If a ship is a sunk, or wrecked, substitute those reasons for the word "Sold" in the box. Change "Fate" to "Cause", and give the cause of sinking in place of "Scrapped", e.g. "Mined" or "Sunk by U-42."

The "wiki markup" in full:

Adding Images

The best "wiki markup" for adding an image to a page in most situations is;

[[File:Example.jpg|thumb|right|350px|Caption text.<br><small>Photograph: Example source.</small>]]

Where;

  • "File:Example.jpg" is the image you've uploaded.
  • "thumb" creates a box around the image, into which a caption can go.
  • "right" aligns the image to the right-hand side of the page. One can also use "left", to align the photo to the left, or "center".
  • "350px" is the width of the image in pixels. Usually either this size or 300px should be used.
  • "Caption text." The caption should be as brief as possible.
  • "Photograph: Example source." This indicates the original source of the image, where known. The <br> creates a new line.

The first photograph of a person on an article about them should go at the top of the page. Others should go in the relevant section. For example, a photograph of Admiral of the Fleet Sir Henry B. Jackson as a Captain would go in the "Captain" section of the article. If, however, there wasn't a photograph of him in the article, it would go at the top until a later photograph could be found.
