Commander (retired) SIR Graham John Bower, K.C.B., R.N. (15 June, 1848 – 2 August, 1933) served in the Royal Navy.

Life & Career

Bower was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 23 April, 1872.

In 1879 while serving in Wolverine, Bower submitted one of seven essays in competition for the Royal United Service Institution's Gold Medal on the assigned topic of "Naval tactics on the open sea, with the existing types of vessels and weapons". His essay was ranked second and was "highly commended". The Institution's Chairman had "recently received a report from [Bower] of work in New Caledonia among the natives, which proved, not only his ability to write such an essay, but demonstrated wonderful coolness and presence of mind under circumstances when, being alone, he ran considerable risk of being killed and eaten."[1]

Bower was placed on the Retired List at his own request at the rank of Commander on 29 February, 1884.
