George Metcalfe Mercer
Commander R.N.R. (retired) George Metcalfe Mercer, D.S.C., R.D., R.N.R. (1 January, 1884 – 13 November, 1961) served in the Royal Naval Reserve.
Life & Career
Mercer was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant R.N.R. on 1 July, 1912.[1]
Mercer was appointed to the Portsmouth flagship Asia on 26 October, 1914. He remained in this ship until 18 November, 1916.[2]
Mercer was appointed a Commodore of Convoys on 19 March, 1918. He kept at this until 25 December, and was logged for "neglecting to take precautions, whereby a collision resulted."[3]
Demobilised on 18 January, 1919, postdated to 31 January, Mercer was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-Commander R.N.R. on 1 July, 1920.[4]
Mercer was placed on the Retired List on account of age at the rank of Commander R.N.R. on 1 January, 1929.[5]
World War II
Mobilised on 5 September 1939 as S.T.O., Grade I, Plymouth. In 1948, he reported that he was a temporary Nautical Surveyor at the M.O.T.'s Marine Surveyor's Office in Hull.[6]
