George Augustus Crosbie Ward
Captain (retired) George Augustus Crosbie Ward, O.B.E., R.N. (14 August, 1865 – ) served in the Royal Navy.
Life & Career
Ward was born in Dublin.[1]
Ward was awarded the Egyptian Medal in 1883.[2]
Ward was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant in June 1889.[3]
Ward was promoted to the rank of Commander in December, 1901. Ward was superseded in Bedford at his own request on 6 May, 1904. The Vice-Admiral, Channel Fleet reported that Ward had "taken to drink."[4]
Ward received no further appointments following this turn of events and was placed on the Retired List owing to non-service on 11 May, 1909. He was not to be granted a step in rank thereafter.[5]
Ward was appointed to the armed yacht Clementina from September 1914 until being superseded as he required an operation on 19 March 1915. He then briefly commanded a ship whose name is illegible in his Service Record from 17 April until he was removed in poor health on 20 June, 1915. Deemed fit for shore service only, Ward served as Commander in Charge, Naval Base, Poole. He served in this capacity throughout the war, being reverted to the Retired List on 15 March 1919. He was granted the rank of Captain in recognition of his wartime service, dated 11 November, 1918.[6]
