Edward Templeton Grayston
Commander R.N.R. (retired) Edward Templeton Grayston, O.B.E., D.S.C., R.D., R.N.R. (12 November, 1886 – 19 December, 1949) was an officer in the Royal Naval Reserve.
Life & Career
Grayston was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant R.N.R. on 1 January, 1916.[1]
He served in the monitor Roberts as navigator from 22 May 1917 to 9 October 1918.[2]
Grayston was appointed in command of the gunboat Cicala on 7 October, 1918.[3]
Grayston was demobilised on 22 August, 1919 and was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-Commander R.N.R. on 1 January, 1924.[4]
Grayston was placed on the Retired List on account of age at the rank of Commander R.N.R. on 12 November, 1931.[5]
World War II
Grayston received the Admiralty's appreciation when his command, the M.V. Karamea was atatcked by enemy aircraft.[6] In another incident (possibly in the Great War), he evaded a German submarine in the Karamea for four hours.[7]
In November 1948, Grayston reported that he was living in Devon and working as captain of R.M.S. Moreton Bay of the Shaw Savill Line, due for retirement in 1951. He gamely reported himself fit for general service if required, but he collapsed and died in the company offices in December 1949.[8]
