Commander (retired) Edward Leslie Dayrell Bartley, (2 March, 1896 – 7 October, 1969) served in the Royal Navy.

Life & Career

The son of Lt. Col. E. B. Bartley of the Royal Engineers.[1]

His first appointment was to the battleship Hibernia on 15 September, 1913. He remained in her through 8 November, 1915. He served next in T.B. 9. In April, 1916, he was assigned to an illegible destroyer and then on 4 May transferred to Jackal, in which he served until March 1917.[2]

Bartley was made a probationary Flight Sub-Lieutenant on 1 March, 1917 and confirmed in the rank on 19 April.[3]

Bartley was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 15 November, 1917.[4]

He relinquished his commission in the R.A.F. on 23 November, 1918.[5]

Bartley was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-Commander on 15 November, 1925.[6]

World War II

Bartley was placed on the Retired List on account of age at the rank of Commander on 2 March, 1941.[7]
