Lieutenant-Commander Cecil John L'Estrange-Malone (7 September, 1890 – 25 February, 1965) served in the Royal Navy.

Life & Career

The son of Reverend Savile L'Estrange Malone.

L'Estrange-Malone was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 15 December, 1911.[1]

L'Estrange-Malone was promoted to the rank of Squadron Commander on 1 July, 1914.[2]

In 1916, he addressed an insubordinate letter to the Admiralty. This temerity would be repeated, post-war.

L'Estrange-Malone was promoted to the rank of Wing Commander on 31 December, 1916.[3]

L'Estrange-Malone was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-Commander on 15 December, 1919.[4]

He proceeded to Russia in 1920 without first obtaining permission to do so. This was a grave offence in contravention of Article 857 of the King's Rules and Admiralty Instructions. Worse, he had obtained his passport on the basis of claiming that he was only going to Helsingford with General Sir Hubert Gough. As a kicker, when these deceptions were pointed out to him, he addressed the First Lord in an insubordinate manner. His name was removed from the Navy List on 25 March, 1920.[5]

He made an effort to serve, commencing in 1937. It appears this went nowhere in the end.
