The eight Second-Class Cruisers of the Astræa Class were completed between 1894 and 1896 and were quite old during World War I.

Four 18-in tubes arranged as follows:[1]
- Two fixed tubes at bow and stern
- Two Mark V D2 tubes on deck, trainable from 15 degrees abaft to 65 degrees ahead of the beam.
