Captain Apsley Dunbar Maxwell Cherry (7 August, 1876 – 24 May, 1955) was an officer in the Royal Navy.

Life & Career

Cherry was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 30 June, 1898.[1]

In August of 1905, Cherry acted as an interpreter during a visit from the French fleet.[2]

On 1 May 1907 he was admitted to Plymouth Hospital with a cerebral concussion. He was discharged on 29 May, but would not be declared fit before November.[3]

Cherry was promoted to the rank of Commander on 31 December, 1910.[4]

Cherry was appointed in command of the destroyer Crusader on 1 August, 1911.[5] In March of 1912, the Admiralty informed him that he had failed in his duty as commanding officer in not governing his first Lieutenant's consumption of alcohol. In September 1913, he lost the destroyer's anchor and cable. These missteps were offset by favourable inspection reports.[6]

He was appointed in command of the destroyer Paragon on 3 December, 1913.[7]

Great War

Cherry was appointed in command of the Tipperary on 23 November 1915 and grounded her on 21 February, 1916. Captain Farie recommended him for promotion in December, 1916 and again in June 1917. Cherry received his promotion to Captain on 30 June, 1917.[8]

Cherry was appointed in command of the depot ship Columbine on 3 September, 1917.[9]

Post-War

Cherry was appointed in command of the monitor Erebus on 11 May, 1920.[10]

World War II

Cherry was reverted to the Retired List as medically unfit on 27 October, 1945.[11]
