Alfred Shepard Wolfe

Commander Alfred Shepard Wolfe, (5 March, 1891 – 28 August, 1936) served in the United States Navy.

Life & Career

Wolfe was born in Louisiana and was appointed to the Naval Academy from the same state. Reportedly the "youngest midshipman in the Navy" when he entered the Academy, Wolfe graduated with the Class of 1911.[1]

Wolfe was commissioned Ensign on 7 March, 1912 and enjoyed the normal early-career duty and promotions, being promoted to the rank of Lieutenant (Junior Grade) on 7 March, 1915.[2][3] When the United States entered World War I Wolfe, then serving aboard battleship Texas, was promoted to the temporary rank of Lieutenant on 1 July, 1917, and received permanent promotion to this rank on 7 March, 1918. He was temporarily promoted to the rank of Lieutenant Commander on 15 August, 1918.[4][5]

Following the war, Wolfe was permanently promoted to the rank of Lieutenant Commander on 1 January, 1922 and served as Executive Officer of gunboat Asheville before assuming his first command, destroyer Hart in 1923. After two years in command, Wolfe assumed command of destroyer John D. Edwards in 1925. By 1926 he was stationed at the Washington Navy Yard where he commanded destroyer Allen on summer training cruises for Naval Reservists through 1927.[6][7][8][9][10][11][12]

This proved to be his last command assignment. Wolfe was promoted to the rank of Commander on 4 June, 1931, following service on battleship Tennessee.[13][14] His last seagoing assignment was as Executive Officer on repair ship Vestal from 1933 to 1934.[15][16] By 1936, he was in charge of the recruiting station in New Orleans. He died as the result of injuries received in an automobile accident just outside of New Orleans in late August, 1936.[17][18]
