Vice-Admiral (retired) Wion de Malpas Egerton (16 April, 1879 – 28 December, 1942) was an officer in the Royal Navy.

Life & Career

Egerton was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 15 April, 1900.[1]

Egerton was promoted to the rank of Commander on 30 June, 1912.[2]

As a Commander, he was appointed in command of the destroyer Violet of the Seventh Destroyer Flotilla on 5 November, 1912.[3]

Egerton was appointed in command of the new destroyer Lance on 29 July, 1914.[4] On 17 October, 1914, he commanded Lance as one of four destroyers of the Third Destroyer Flotilla Captain Cecil H. Fox in the Undaunted led in the Battle off Texel, where the British succeeded in destroying an inferior force of four torpedo boats.

Egerton was promoted to the rank of Captain on 30 June, 1917.[5]

On 5 July 1917, he was appointed in command of the light cruiser Penelope.[6]

Egerton left Penelope when he appointed in command of the light cruiser Centaur in January, 1918.[7]

Post-War

Egerton was reappointed in Centaur upon her re-commissioning in February, 1919. He was superseded in her in September, 1919.[8]

He was promoted to the rank of Rear-Admiral on 11 June, 1928.[9]

He retired on 1 June, 1930 and was advanced to the rank of Vice-Admiral on the Retired List on 4 January, 1933.[10]

World War II

As a convoy commodore, Egerton's ship Empire Shackleton was torpedoed and lost. THough Egerton was rescued by H.M.S. Fidelity, he died when she, too, was torpedoed.[11]
