Admiral William Oswald Story, C.B.E., Royal Navy, Retired (18 April, 1859 – 14 January, 1938) was an officer of the Royal Navy.

Life & Career

William Oswald Story was born on 10 April, 1859, at Bingfield, Co. Cavan.

Story saw active service in the Egyptian War of 1882 while Sub-Lieutenant of the gunboat Mosquito, and commanded a party landed for service at Chalof. Highly commended in the despatches of Commander The Honourable F. R. Sandilands, he was specially promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 8 September, 1882.[1]

He was promoted to the rank of Commander dated 30 June, 1896.[2]

Captain

Story was promoted to the rank of Captain on 1 January, 1902.[3] On 10 June, 1903, he was appointed to Excellent, for the Narcissus,[4] commanding Narcissus in Manœuvres starting on that date.[5]

He was appointed in command of the first class protected cruiser Grafton on 1 April, 1905.[6]

On 6 February, 1906, Story was appointed in command of armoured cruiser Cumberland[7]

On 7 April, 1907, Story was appointed in command of the battleship London.[8]

He was to be in London for less than a year, being then appointed as captain of the battleship Canopus on 1 February, 1908.[9]

Flag Rank

Story was promoted to the rank of Rear-Admiral on 18 September, 1911, vice Jellicoe.[10] He was appointed for signal and war courses dated 12 February, 1912.[11]

In accordance with the provisions of the Order in Council of 8 December, 1903, Story was placed on the Retired List, at his own request, on 30 January, 1912.[12] He was advanced to the rank of Vice-Admiral on the Retired List on 26 April, 1917,[13] and to the rank of Admiral on the Retired List on 3 October, 1919.[14]
