Admiral SIR William Montagu Dowell, G.C.B., Royal Navy (2 August, 1825 – 27 December, 1912) was an officer of the Royal Navy.

Life & Career

Dowell was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 25 October, 1847.

For services in the trenches at Sevastopol he was promoted to the rank of Commander dated 13 November, 1854.[1]

For services in Canton, Dowell was promoted to the rank of Captain on 26 February, 1858.[2]

Flag Rank

Dowell was appointed Senior Officer on the Coast of Ireland on 26 September, 1878.[3] He was promoted to the rank of Vice-Admiral on 20 January, 1880, vice Wintour.[4] On 17 November, 1882, he was knighted and appointed an Ordinary Member of the Second Class, or Knight Commander, in the Military Division of the Order of the Bath (K.C.B.).[5]

On 1 July, 1885, he was promoted to the rank of Admiral.[6] In accordance with the provisions of the Order in Council of 22 February, 1870, he was placed on the Retired List on 2 August, 1890.[7]

On the occasion of the Queen's birthday he was appointed an Ordinary Member of the First Class, or Knight Grand Cross, in the Military Division of the Order of the Bath (G.C.B.) on 25 May, 1895.[8]
