Admiral Walter Maurice Ellerton, C.B., Royal Navy, Retired (5 August, 1870 – 27 November, 1948) was an officer of the Royal Navy.

Life & Career

On 28 January, 1892, Ellerton was confirmed in the rank of Sub-Lieutenant, dated 14 May, 1890.[1]

Ellerton was promoted to the rank of Commander on 30 June, 1904.[2]

He was promoted to the rank of Captain on 31 December, 1910.[3]

In January 1913, he was made captain of the armoured cruiser King Alfred.[4] The same source, oddly also claims he was appointed Captain of the armoured cruiser Carnarvon in January 1913.[5]

In January 1914 he was appointed in command of the heavy cruiser Cornwall,[6] a command he would retain through much of the war.

Great War

On the occasion of the King's birthday he was appointed an Ordinary Member of the Third Class, or Companion, in the Military Division of the Most Honourable Order of the Bath (C.B.) on 4 June, 1917.[7]

Post-War

On 1 January, 1919, Ellerton assumed the position of Director of Training and Staff Duties on the Naval Staff. He was succeeded on 1 January, 1921, by Captain Vernon H. S. Haggard.[8] On 2 July he was promoted to the rank of Rear-Admiral, vice Gurner.[9]

Ellerton was promoted to the rank of Vice-Admiral on 4 October, 1926, vice Alexander-Sinclair.[10]
