Commander R.N.R. Walter Conway Hake, R.D., Royal Navy, Retired (25 November, 1888 – ) was an officer in the Royal Naval Reserve.

Life & Career

Hake was born in London on 25 November, 1888.[1]

His seagoing life in civilian service placed him in good standing as a naval reservist, with work in S.S. Chirripo, Barranca, and Chagres of the Elders & Fyffes company, culminating in first mate ranks and even Chief Officer in Barranca by 1913.[2]

Hake was granted the rank of Acting Sublieutenant with a date of seniority of 25 January, 1911. He received a Certificate of Competency on 28 June, 1911 with a grade of "O.C.".[3]

As an Acting Sublieutenant, Hake was appointed to Adventure for the Annual Manoeuvres on 2 July, 1912. After leaving on the 26th of July, his evaluator noted Hake's service was satisfactory.[4]

Great War

On 14 September, 1914, Hake was appointed to the armed merchant cruiser Edinburgh Castle as Acting Lieutenant,[5][6] boarding the ship that same day.[7]

By July, 1915, he was acting as the ship's navigating officer.[8]

On 20 February, 1916, Hake piloted the S.S. Photinia to Stanley Harbour.[9]

Hake was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant R.N.R. on 2 March, 1916 with a date of seniority of 2 August, 1915.[10]

On 12 March, 1918 he was discharged from Edinburgh Castle to the armed merchant cruiser Kildonan Castle for passage.[11] On 14 May, 1918, he was appointed the temporary navigating officer in Tyne during the absence of Lieutenant, R.N.R. George Brooks, starting service on the 19th. This appointment ended on 17 June.

Hake was appointed in command of the destroyer Fame on 19 August, 1918.[12] Though his service record indicates he assumed command on 1 September, 1918, the ship's log shows that he boarded her on 26 November, 1918, apparently replacing Lieutenant R.N.R. Reginald Bernard who may have held command temporarily. Hake left Fame on 21st May 1920 to go to H.M.S. Tamar before being demobilised on 31 May, 1920,[13] being replaced in command of Fame by Lt. Herbert Claude Millett from H.M.S. Cadmus until the destroyer paid off in June. On 1 June, Hake was appointed Assistant Harbour Master, Hong Kong.[14]

Hake was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-Commander R.N.R. on 2 August, 1923.

World War II

Hake was called up in October, 1941 for plotting duties with "O.T.D.". In May, 1942, he was appointed to H.M.S. Orlando in Greenock as Assistant Admiralty Berthing Officer with the rank of Acting Commander. He remained in the post until January, 1945.[15]

He was retired on 20 August, 1946 with the War Service rank of Commander R.N.R..
