Admiral Vivian Henry Gerald Bernard, C.B., Royal Navy, Retired (30 August, 1868 – 18 February, 1934) was an officer of the Royal Navy.

Life & Career

Bernard's promotion to the rank of Lieutenant was dated 25 February, 1889.[1]

Bernard was promoted to the rank of Commander on 30 June, 1901.[2]

Captain

Bernard was promoted to the rank of Captain on 30 June, 1906.[3]

In August 1907, he assumed command of the first class protected cruiser Argonaut.[4]

He was appointed in command of the battleship Revenge on 17 August, 1908.[5]

Great War

Bernard was appointed to command the battleship Venerable on 17 August, 1914.[6]

He was appointed in command of the light cruiser Neptune on 11 February, 1916,[7] and commanded the ship through the Battle of Jutland and submitted his report of the action.

On 3 July, 1917, Bernard was appointed a Naval Aide-de-Camp to King George V, vice Hunt.[8] On 20 September he was promoted to the rank of Rear-Admiral, vice Harbord.[9] On 27 November he hoisted his flag in the surveying vessel Research as Senior Naval Officer and Rear-Admiral of the Dockyard at Portland,[10] and officer in charge of Auxiliary Patrol Area XIII.[11]

He was appointed an Additional Member of the Third Class, or Companion, in the Military Division of the Most Honourable Order of the Bath (C.B.) on 1 January, 1918.[12]

Post-War

Bernard was promoted to the rank of Vice-Admiral on 15 November, 1922, vice Fremantle, and was placed on the Retired List on 16 November.[13] He was advanced to the rank of Admiral on the Retired List on 1 August, 1927.[14]
