Commander Valentine Francis Gibbs, R.N. (1 December, 1881 – 23 April, 1918) was an officer in the Royal Navy.

Life & Career

The son of T. F. Gibbs was born in Cape Colony.[1]

Gibbs was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 15 January, 1903.[2]

Gibbs was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-Commander on 15 January, 1911.[3]

Gibbs was promoted to the rank of Commander on 10 August, 1914 and was appointed as Gunnery Officer in H.M.S. Agincourt from August, 1914 until 28 July, 1916. He directed her gunfire at the Battle of Jutland.[4]

In August, 1916, he was sent to Tiger to be her gunnery officer. In April of 1918, he was selected to be part of the Zeebrugge Raid, landing from the ferry Iris. He died of wounds sustained in the action on 23 April.[5]
