The United States Coast Guard was created by Congress as the "Revenue Marine" on 4 August, 1790.

Its mission evolved over time, but most generally concerned areas of revenue protection, interdiction of smuggling, and general life saving operations in American coastal waters. In times of war, it often undertook missions of escort and patrol that made it difficult to distinguish from the U.S. Navy.
