U.S.S. Terror was one of four iron-hulled, twin-screw, double-turreted monitors of the Amphitrite class completed for the U.S. Navy.

Construction started in 1874 but work was suspended in 1877. After six years, work resumed, and the ship was finally launched on 24 March, 1883.

Delivered to the Navy in 1887, the still-unfinished warship was taken to the New York Navy Yard for completion – work which continued at a leisurely pace.

Service

A quarter century after work began, Terror was finally commissioned at New York on 15 April, 1896 with Captain Purnell F. Harrington in command.
