Thomas Roderick Fforde

Captain (retired) Thomas Roderick Fforde, O.B.E. (18 May, 1882 – 15 November, 1949) served in the Royal Navy.

Life & Career

The son of Civil Engineer James Fforde was born in Surbiton.[1]

As a Midshipman, Fforde went ashore in a landing expedition during the Boxer Rebellion.

Fforde was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 15 August, 1903.[2]

Fforde was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-Commander on 15 August, 1911.[3]

When war broke out, Fforde was serving as torpedo officer in the dreadnought H.M.S. Marlborough. He was promoted to the rank of Commander on 31 December, 1915 and saw action in the ship at the Battle of Jutland. He left Marlborough on 28 February, 1917, soon to take up staff work with the D.T.M..[4]

Retired at own request on 6 July 1922, Fforde was promoted to the rank of Captain (retired) on 18 May, 1927.[5]

World War II

Fforde reported he was not fit due to degraded eyesight. He died in late 1949 following a fall from a bicycle that broke his spine.[6]
