He married Jeanie M. CHatman on 2 February, 1909.[3]

MacFarlan was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-Commander on 30 September, 1911.[4]

MacFarlan was appointed to the battleship Audacious as torpedo officer on 10 April, 1913. He would serve in this role until her loss to a mine on 27 October, 1914, when he deftly boarded a destroyer's whaler from her upper deck abreast 'Q' turret.[5]

He was appointed as torpedo officer in Warspite on 14 January, 1915.

MacFarlan was promoted to the rank of Commander on 30 June, 1916.[6]

Superseded in Warspite on 18 January or 8 March, 1918.[7]

Post-War

MacFarlan was appointed to the light cruiser Carlisle on 11 August, 1924 to take command when she commissioned in September.

He was appointed in command of the battleship Centurion on 19 July, 1927.

MacFarlan was promoted to the rank of Rear-Admiral on 31 July, 1934 and placed on the Retired List the next day in accordance with Order in Council of 9 March, 1914.[9]

Just as World War II was beginning, MacFarlan was brought back for an appointment at Selection Board Number 9, being superseded there on 1 December, 1940 by Gerald Cartmell Harrison.[10]
