Boyle was born in London.  Upon passing out of the {{UK-1Britannia|f=tp}} on 20 December 1878 he received his first naval appointment as a {{NavCadRN}} n the {{UK-1Monarch|f=t}}, serving in the Mediterranean.  He would spent three years in her, being promoted to the rank of {{MidRN}} on 21 July 1879.  When the ship paid off on 26 January 1882, Boyle cooled his heels for two months at {{UK-DukeOfWellington}} at Portsmouth.

Vice-Admiral THE HONOURABLE Robert Francis Boyle, M.V.O., R.N. (12 December, 1863 – 11 September, 1922) was an officer of the Royal Navy.

Life & Career

Boyle was born in London. Upon passing out of the training ship H.M.S. Britannia on 20 December 1878 he received his first naval appointment as a Naval Cadet n the masted turret ship Monarch, serving in the Mediterranean. He would spent three years in her, being promoted to the rank of Midshipman on 21 July 1879. When the ship paid off on 26 January 1882, Boyle cooled his heels for two months at Duke of Wellington at Portsmouth.

He was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 20 August, 1886.[1]

Boyle was promoted to the rank of Commander on 31 August, 1897.[2]

Captain

Boyle was promoted to the rank of Captain on 31 December, 1903.[3]

He was appointed in command of Leviathan and as Flag Captain to Rear-Admiral The Hon. Hedworth Lambton on 26 June, 1905.[4]

He was appointed in command of the armoured cruiser Bacchante in November 1906, remaining there only until January.

He was appointed in command of Prince George on 5 March, 1907.[5]

Boyle was appointed in command of the armoured cruiser Antrim on 1 September, 1908.[6]

He served in the Atlantic Fleet as Captain of the armoured cruiser Duke of Edinburgh of the Fifth Cruiser Squadron from April 1909 to 18 May, 1911. In March of 1911, he was chastised for a "serious lack of usual precautions in firing of 9.2-in and 6-in guns in Duke of Edinburgh". Great War

Boyle was promoted to the rank of Rear-Admiral on 25 April, 1914, vice Slade.[8]

In March, 1916, he was appointed to fly his flag at Stornoway[9], being appointed additional to the yacht Iolaire on the tenth.[10]

Boyle was promoted to the rank of Vice-Admiral on 10 February, 1919, and placed on the Retired List on 11 February.[11]

Boyle acted as Nautical Assessor in the House of Lords from 1920 to 1922. He would die on 11 September at Harewood House, Leeds.
