Admiral THE RIGHT HONOURABLE Richard Morden Harbord-Hamond, Tenth Baron Suffield, Royal Navy, Retired (24 August, 1865 – 2 February, 1951) was an officer of the Royal Navy.

Life & Career

Lord Suffield was born Richard Morden Harbord on 24 August, 1865, in Hanworth, Norfolk.

He was appointed Flag Lieutenant to Admiral Sir Algernon McL. Lyons, Commander-in-Chief, Plymouth, on 2 June, 1893.[1]

Harbord was promoted to the rank of Commander on 30 June, 1901.[2]

Captain

He was promoted to the rank of Captain on 30 June, 1906.[3]

Harbord was appointed in command of the first class protected cruiser Terrible on 20 July, 1907.[4]

Harbord was appointed in command of the Magnificent on 27 November, 1908.[5]

In May 1909, he assumed command of the second class protected cruiser Isis, remaining with the ship until October 1910.[6]

He was appointed captain of the armoured cruiser Euryalus in November 1910.[7]

Great War

He was appointed in command of the battleship Mars on 1 August, 1914.[8]

He was appointed to command the battleship Zealandia in February, 1915.[9]

Harbord was appointed to Research as Commodore-in-Charge at Portland on 14 September, 1916, in succession to Rear-Admiral Frank E. C. Ryan. He was promoted to the rank of Rear-Admiral on 19 September, 1917, vice Evan-Thomas, and was placed on the Retired List on 20 September.[10] His future in the Navy had been decided at a meeting of the Board of Admiralty on 15 June, when four of the five Sea Lords (Jellicoe dissenting) voted that he be retired on promotion to Flag Rank under Section III of the Order in Council of 9 March, 1914.[11] He assumed the additional name of Hamond by Royal Licence and Authority on 6 November.[12] He was superseded at Portland on 27 November.

Harbord-Hamond was advanced to the rank of Vice-Admiral on 15 November, 1922,[13] and was advanced to Admiral on the Retired List on 1 August, 1927.[14]

Upon the death of his first cousin in 1946, Harbord became the Tenth Baron Suffield in the Peerage of Great Britain and Eleventh Baronet in the Baronetage of Great Britain.
