Vice-Admiral THE HONOURABLE SIR Richard Augustus Sandys Hill, C.B., K.B.E., Royal Navy (2 April, 1880 – 5 July, 1954) was an officer of the Royal Navy during the First World War.

Life & Career

Hill was promoted to Lieutenant on 31 December, 1901.[1]

He qualified as an Interpreter in French at some point.

Hill was promoted to Commander on 31 December, 1913.[2]

Post-War

Hill was promoted to Captain on 31 December, 1918.[3]

Hill was appointed in command of Iron Duke in July, 1919.

His command of notable vessels continued when he was appointed captain of the battleship H.M.S. Barham in September 1924, remaining with her until January of 1926.

Hill was promoted to Rear-Admiral on 5 April, 1930.[4]

Hill was promoted to Vice-Admiral on 19 July, 1935 and placed on the Retired List the following day.[5]

World War II

He was made a Commodore, Second Class, R.N.R. on 16 September, 1939 and then appointed to Eaglet II on 14 November for the Liverpool Convoy Pool.[6]

On 3 February, 1942 he was made Flag Officer in Charge, Greenock, vice Watson, serving in the rank of Rear Admiral. He was reverted to the Retired List on 13 April, 1946.[7]
