Rear-Admiral of the United Kingdom was a court appointment.

Like Vice-Admiral of the United Kingdom, it was an ancient office which had fallen into desuetude until being revived in 1901 by King Edward VII as high court appointments, corresponding to the military Silver Stick and Gold Stick in Waiting.
