Life & Career

Born in Platt Hall, Rusholme, Tindal may have been originally named Ralph Tindal-Carill-Worsley, but his mother wrote in 1913 to ask that he simply be called Ralph Tindal.[1]

Tindal was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 31 March, 1904.[2]

Tindal was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-Commander on 31 March, 1912 and was placed on the Retired List at his own request on 1 August, 1912.[3]

Following the outbreak of war, Tindal was appointed in command of the destroyer Electra on 6 November, 1914.[4]

In August, 1915, Tindal was appointed in command of the torpedo gunboat Circe.[5]

On 3 April, 1917, H.M.S. Jason was lost to a mine. Tindal's performance on this occasion prompted the Admiralty to grant him the acting rank of Commander, effective 22 May. Although his time in Circe ended in May 1917, Tindal continued to work with paddle minesweepers until he reverted to the Retired List on 1 May 1919. He was promoted to the rank of Commander (retired) on 27 December, 1921.[6]
