((CaptUS}} (retired) Ralph Greene Risley (1 Sep 1890 – 19 June, 1962) served in the United States Navy.

Life & Career

Risley was born in Connecticut and was appointed to the Naval Academy from the same state, graduating with the Class of 1911. His first duty assignment was on his "home state" battleship Connecticut.[1]

Risley was promoted to the rank of Ensign on 7 March 1912[2] and to the rank of Lieutenant (Junior Grade) on 7 March 1915.[3]

During World War I, Risley received promotion to the rank of Lieutenant on 7 March 1918 and to the temporary rank of Lieutenant Commander on 1 July, 1918.[4] In 1919 he briefly commanded the destroyer Jouett,[5] and in 1921 into 1922 he was appointed commanding officer of the destroyer Cowell. Risley was promoted to the permanent rank of Lieutenant Commander on 31 December, 1921.[6]

The remainder of Risley's active duty career saw him serve as Executive Officer of the ammunition ship Nitro in 1922[7] and as Officer-in-Charge of the Branch Hydrographic Office in Honolulu, Hawaii, starting in 1924.[8] However, he never again held a command at sea.

Risley was retired on 30 June, 1932 for ineligibility for further promotion.[9] However, World War II saw him recalled to active duty and receive further promotions.

In 1941 he served on the staff at the headquarters of the Thirteenth Naval District[10]

Risley was promoted to the rank of Commander on the Retired List on 25 February 1942.[11] By 1943 he served as Chief of Staff to the Commandant of the Thirteenth Naval District.[12] His final promotion came when Risley was promoted to the rank of Captain on the Retired List on 22 July, 1943.[13]

Following the war Risley retained his rank of Captain on the Retired List.[14]
