Captain Price Vaughan Lewes, C.B., and D.S.O. (27 February, 1865 – 9 November, 1914) was an officer of the Royal Navy.

Life & Career

Lewes was promoted to Lieutenant on 30 June, 1888 and made Commander on 6 September, 1898.[1]

Though overland travel to visit a dangerously ill wife may have removed him from the scene, he was fortunate to receive no apparent blame when the torpedo gunboat Hazard torpedoed and sank a manned steam launch shortly before Christmas in 1899. Luckily, no one was injured.[2]

He was promoted to Captain on 30 June, 1905.[3]

Captain

On 20 December 1905, Lewes was appointed to Hermes for command of the second class protected cruiser Hyacinth. He was reappointed on her re-commissioning in April, 1906 and stayed in her until December 20th.[4]

He was appointed command of the battleship Cæsar on 9 August, 1910.[5]

On 6 June of 1911, he was appointed in command of Commonwealth,[6] operating with the Fourth Battle Squadron.

On 28 July 1914, he was placed in command of the battleship Superb,[7] operating with the First Battle Squadron[8] until forced to leave her in ill health on 4 November. He died on the 9th in Plymouth, of complications of a renal disease and was buried on the 11th in Plymouth Cemetery, grave No. 895, Lot A..[9]
