Commander Oswald William Ormsby, R.N. (11 November, 1876 – 21 November, 1913) served in the Royal Navy.

Life & Career

The son of Reverend G. A. Ormsby was born in Rainton, Durham.[1]

Ormsby was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant in September, 1897.[2]

Ormsby commanded T.B. 87 and the Loch Ryan T.B. Flotilla in the Annual Manoeuvres of 1903.[3] On 27 July 1903, T.B. 87 and T.B. 80 collided and Ormsby was faulted for a "great lack of judgement" in the affair and incurred the Admiralty's severe displeasure.[4]

A Court of Enquiry into the death of an A.B. by a snapped wire hawser resulted in Ormsby being cautioned to be more careful in future.[5]

Ormsby was promoted to the rank of Commander on 31 December, 1908.[6]

Ormsby was appointed to Berwick of the Fourth Cruiser Squadron as executive officer on 16 May, 1911. In May 1912, he and other officers were blamed for faulty organisation and lack of supervision that resulted in damage to one of Berwick's pinnaces.[7]

Ormsby was still serving in Berwick in November 1913 when he was admitted in a dangerously ill state to a military hospital in Jamaica. He died after an operation for a duodenal ulcer at Kingston Hospital.[8]
