Commander (retired) Odiarne Unett Coates (15 December, 1868 – ) was an officer in the Royal Navy.

Life & Career

The son of a reverend W. U. Coates of Rockhampton, Coates gained seven months' time on passing out of Britannia.

Coates was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 1 October, 1891.[1]

Coates was appointed in command of the destroyer Ferret on 2 August, 1897.[2]

Following some disappointing inspections of Sparrow, in January 1903 Vice-Admiral Beaumont wrote that Coates was "a painstaking zealous officer, but who will never successfully command."

Coates retired with the rank of Commander on 6 March, 1913. He commanded the armed yachts Ombra, Eros and Salvator early in the war.
