Vice-Admiral Marcus Rowley Hill, C.B.E., Royal Navy, Retired (13 March, 1867 – 8 February, 1925) was an officer of the Royal Navy.

Early Life & Career

Hill was appointed to the Royal Yacht Victoria and Albert on 1 July, 1890.[1]

He was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 26 August.[2]

Hill was promoted to the rank of Commander on 30 June, 1901.[3]

Hill was promoted to the rank of Captain on 31 December, 1906.[4]

He commanded a series of armoured cruisers. He was appointed command of the Vindictive on 4 August, 1908.[5]

He assumed command of the first class protected cruiser Hawke in October 1909, remaining with her for thirteen months.

In August 1910, Hill assumed command of the light cruiser Glasgow.

He was appointed to command the armoured cruiser Hampshire on 17 January, 1913.[6] He transferred to command Leviathan in July 1914, remaining with her into 1916.

Great War

On 4 May, 1918, Hill was appointed Senior Naval Officer, Simonstown.[7] He was promoted to the rank of Rear-Admiral on 1 September,[8] and placed on the Retired List on 2 September.[9] He was advanced to the rank of Vice-Admiral on the Retired List on 2 November, 1923.[10]

He passed away on 8 February, 1925 at 17 Burton Court, Chelsea, aged fifty-eight.
