Captain Lionel Fitzgerald Maitland-Kirwan, R.N. (10 July, 1879 – 21 September, 1951) was an officer of the Royal Navy during the First World War.

Life & Career

Born in Bellrigg, the son of collier L. M. Kirwan, Esq..

Maitland-Kirwan was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 1 April, 1901.

Maitland-Kirwan was promoted to the rank of Commander on 30 June, 1910. He was appointed to the new battleship King George V to be her first executive officer in November, 1912. He saw her through trials and served in her through commissioning until August, 1913.

Appointed to H.M.S. Lion as executive officer from 31 March, 1915 to 9 January, 1918, participating in the Battle of Jutland. Captain Chatfield felt that his commander possessed a "good power of command."

Maitland-Kirwan was promoted to the rank of Captain on 31 December 1917.

Maitland-Kirwan spent four months on R/A Hyde Parker's Committee at the Admiralty before he was appointed to the second class protected cruiser Talbot on 11 June, 1918 for command, assuming command on 26 July.

Post-War

On 19 January 1921, he was appointed in command of the light cruiser Concord.[1]

In June 1921, he was appointed in command of the light cruiser Cardiff.

Maitland-Kirwan was placed on the Retired List at his own request upon expiration of his Foreign Service Leave, which occurred on 17 March, 1923.

World War II
