Commander (retired) Lewis Bernard Alexander Majendie, D.S.C. (22 June, 1898 – ) served in the Royal Navy.

Life & Career

His father, J. H. C. Majendie, Esq. was a J.P. for Suffolk. His residence was listed as Hedingham Castle in Essex.

He served in Leviathan and Warspite, fighting at the Battle of Jutland in the latter. In March, 1917 he underwent a Torpedo Control Course at H.M.S. Vernon and then was briefly appointed to the destroyer Doon before moving to the Waveney in April.

In December 1917 he started studying submarines and was appointed to the J 4 on 16 April, 1918. On 26 August, 1918 he was placed in H 9, in which he served until January, 1919.

Majendie was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 15 September, 1919. He briefly commanded an interned U-boat during this period.

On 9 March 1926, his L 33 collided with the Chinese S.S. Yen Sing. The Admiralty concluded that he was guilty of negligence rather than an error in judgement in the event. This strike was offset, to some degree by an expression of Their Lordships' appreciaction of his service "in difficult situations during disturbances in China."

Majendie was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-Commander on 15 September, 1927.

In 1932, he committed an error in judgement which resulted in discrepancies in the tobacco [illeg] of Proteus.

After reverted to General Service in 1934, Majendie was placed on the Retired List at his own request on 22 August, 1934 and was promoted to the rank of Commander on 22 June, 1938.

World War II

Early in the war, he appears to have been "concerned in fraudulent conversion of money."

His D.S.C, gazetted on 16 January 1945, was for "courage, resolution and skill while serving in H.M.S. Louis in anti-U-boat operations."
