Captain (retired) Lawrence Hodson Bayley, R.N. (6 March, 1893 – 16 November, 1955) served in the Royal Navy.

Life & Career

The son of Edward H. Bayley, Esq., J.P., a (corporate?) Director.

Bayley was appointed to H.M.S. Dolphin for instruction in submarines on 18 May, 1914. Captain Mawbey noted that Bayley was a good boxer.

Bayley was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 15 April, 1915 and re-appointed to Dolphin. He did not emerge until 10 August, when he was appointed to Maidstone for service in submarines. In November, he was assigned specifically, to serve aboard D 6.

On 29 April, 1916, Bayley was ordered to join K 3.

On 29 November, 1916, he was appointed to E 39. Commander Crowther noted that Bayley had a good command of French and a fair sense of German.

On 25 November, 1917, he was appointed to Dolphin for submarines. On 5 January, 1918, he moved to Arrogant for the same work.

Bayley received his first command appointment, to the submarine V 4 on 1 February, 1918. On 9 September, he was appointed in command of the larger E 53.

Post-War

Bayley took command of H 48 in September, 1919. She collided with and damaged the fishing vessel Junita in 1920 and Bayley was admonished for failing to report the accident. He was later faulted for failing to explain in adequate detail the malfunction of a bad engine clutch to his relief in H 48.

In 1921, he asked to leave the submarine service in order to pursue qualification in physical training. He was granted permission to participate in the Imperial Service Boxing Championship.

Bayley was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-Commander on 15 April, 1923. On the 27th, he was admitted to Haslar with an injury to his left knee.

Bayley was promoted to the rank of Commander on 30 June, 1928 as he was working hard to promote physical training in the Navy, resulting in "a large number of officers taking part in many forms of sport."

Bayley was placed on the Retired List at his own request on 1 March, 1937 and subsequently promoted to the rank of Captain (retired) on 6 March, 1938.
