Lancelot John Barrington Walters
Acting Lieutenant Lancelot John Barrington Walters, (19 January, 1895 – 12 December, 1917) served in the Royal Navy, and was rescued but went missing after the destroyer Partridge sank.
Life & Career
Walters served in the battleship Dominion and the destroyer Mallard before being appointed to H.M.S. Menace on 22 February, 1916. He fought in the destroyer at the Battle of Jutland, where she operated as part of the Twelfth Destroyer Flotilla.
Walters was granted the acting rank of Lieutenant on 15 July, 1917 and left Menace to join Partridge of the Fourteenth Destroyer Flotilla. When the ship was left in a sinking condition following the Action of 12 December, 1917, Walters was found, exhausted in the water, by Sub-Lieutenant Aubrey Grey who leapt in to rescue him. Despite a wounded leg, Grey dragged Walters fully 1⁄4 miles and placed him on a raft. Even so, Grey and his raft were never successfully recovered. Sub-lieutenant Grey was rescued by a German destroyer and would eventually be awarded the Royal Humane Society's Stanhope Medal for his lifesaving efforts.
