Commander (retired) John Roberts Poland, R.N. (20 January, 1893 – ) was an officer in the Royal Navy.

Life & Career

The son of J. Poland, Esq., a surgeon.[1]

Poland was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 15 February, 1915. He was appointed to the Achates on 8 March 1916 and would fight in her at the Battle of Jutland as part of the Fourth Destroyer Flotilla.[2]

Poland was appointed in command of the patrol boat P58 on 22 June, 1918.[3]

He was on the books of Iron Duke from 24 October 1919 for duty with the Senior Officer, navigation at Constantinople. On 18 May 1920 he was ordered to return to take the Intelligence Course at Royal Naval College, Greenwich. This training prepared him for intelligence work at Liverpool and Malta, which lasted until 22 April, 1922. He was then sent to Sweden to study the language.[4]

Poland was appointed to the light cruiser Dragon on 9 November, 1922. In this role, he was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-Commander on 15 February, 1923. He left Dragon when he was appointed in command of M.L. 291 from the end of 1924 through 20 April 1926, vice Bilton[?].[5]

Poland would receive a number of appointments in light cruisers in which he would function as an interpreter, including Conquest, Calliope, Castor and Curlew.[6]

Poland was placed on the Retired List at his own request with the rank of Commander on 20 January, 1936.[7]

World War II
