Captain John Phelips Farquharson, D.S.O., O.B.E., R.N., Retired (14 June, 1884 – ) served in the Royal Navy.

Life & Career

Born in Corfu the son of A. J. Farquharson. Farquharson ranked thirty-second among 62 successful candidates in examinations for entry to the Britannia intake term of September 1899, with 2284 marks.[1]

Farquharson was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 1 October, 1906.[2]

Farquharson was appointed to the second class protected cruiser Sappho as gunnery officer on 2 April, 1912, the ship being under the command of Commander Gerald Vivian Cuff Knox and providing particular service to the First Fleet. Farquharson was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-Commander on 1 October, 1914 while still serving in Sappho.[3][4]

Farquharson was appointed in command of the hired yacht Paulina and for duty with the Otranto Barrage on 15 May, 1918. He left her when he was appointed in command of the yacht Catania on 7 August, 1918.[5]

Post-War

Farquharson was promoted to the rank of Commander on 31 December, 1918[6] and left command of Catania on 4 April when he went to join H.M.S. Sarepta, spending some time, perhaps, in temporary command, but generally being additional to her under the command of Skipper, R.N.R. John Wilson.

On 1 December, 1919, Commander Farquharson was appointed to Gibraltar, additional, for the Anti-Submarine School, Portland.[7]

Farquharson was placed on the Retired List at his own request with the rank of Captain on 14 June, 1930.
