John Hugh Bainbridge

Rear-Admiral John Hugh Bainbridge, J.P., Royal Navy (31 May, 1845 – 10 August, 1901) was an officer of the Royal Navy.

His son had the same name, and also served in the Royal Navy.

Life & Career

Bainbridge's father, likewise, had his same name. He would drown on 10 June, 1877.

Bainbridge was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 28 June, 1866.

Bainbridge was promoted to the rank of Commander from the Victoria and Albert with seniority of 18 August, 1876.[1]

Captain

Bainbridge commanded the second class protected cruiser Forth in the Annual Manoeuvres of 1890. His ship acted as part of Fleet Number 2 which represented a hypothetical Hostile Fleet attacking British trade routes.[2]

He was appointed in command of battleship Resolution in the Channel Squadron on 17 December, 1896. On 11 May, 1898, he was appointed in command of the Nile, port guard ship. On 30 August he was appointed Commodore, Second Class in command of a squadron composed of the battleships Nile, Trafalgar, Thunderer, and the torpedo gunboat Spanker. The squadron dispersed at Portland on 12 October and Bainbridge struck his broad pendant on 13 October at Devonport.[3]

Bainbridge was promoted to the rank of Rear-Admiral on 11 July, 1899, vice Fullerton.[4]
