Captain (retired) John Gilbert de Odingsells Coke, C.B.E. (19 October, 1874 – 30 April, 1937) was an officer in the Royal Navy.

Life & Career

On 24 October, 1895 there was a court martial of a Sub-Lieutenant Potter in Hood regarding irregularities in wine accounts and it was deemed that Coke had given evidence of an "unsatisfactory character."[1]

Coke was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 7 April, 1896.[2]

On 3 May, 1901, Coke was invalided from command of the destroyer Conflict on the Mediterranean Station with fever due to the climate.[3]

Coke was promoted to the rank of Commander on 31 December, 1905.[4]

Coke was appointed in command of the destroyer Albacore on 17 June, 1909.[5]

Coke retired at his own request with the rank of Captain on 9 February, 1912.[6]

Great War

Coke was appointed to Columbine, additional, to serve as King's Harbour Master, Scapa Flow in August 1914. He kept at it until 29 September when he was appointed to command Fisgard I and Fisgard II, but he was superseded in this capacity on 28 October 1914 and went to provide special serve under the Director of Naval Ordnance, Morgan Singer. On 1 November, 1915, Coke was reverted to Retired Pay.[7]
